‘The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much’ James 5:16
Those who have wrought mightily for God in the centuries past have been men and women of prayer. More things are wrought by prayer than the world dreams of. For decades the Moravians maintained prayer I towers which were occupied by shifts of men and women who prayed continuously, twenty-four hours each day. During those years of intercession, the Moravian missionaries carried the gospel message to faraway places in ever increasing numbers. What blessings they have brought to needy people! God’s promise has never been rescinded. God told Jeremiah, “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not” The secret of the power of one of the greatest gospel preachers was fervent prayer. Earnestly they pleaded with God: “Oh God, give us both the breath of spiritual life and the fire of unconquerable zeal till nations shall yield to Jesus! Oh thou, who art our God, answer us, we pray Thee! Then we shall see Thee to be God indeed!
“Thy kingdom comes not. Thy work is flagging. Make us of one accord — all believing, all expecting, all praying. Lord, bring us to this waiting state! “Oh, for heavenly fire to fall again — fire which shall affect the most stolid! 0 Spirit of God, Thou art ready to work with us today. Stay not, we beseech Thee, but work at once!” When many of God’s children thus pray, our distraught, desponding, despairing world will have the answer to Elisha’s ancient question found in 2 Kings 2:14, “Where is the Lord God of Elijah?”
